Quick to Forget

It’s funny how quick we forget. The 2015 NBA season just ended in June and it feels as if it has been at least 6 months since we watched the Warriors raise the trophy. That season will be remembered as the “coming out party” of Stephen Curry. Most of us knew he was really good, but now EVERYONE knows he’s really good. The guy is listed as only 6 feet, 3 inches tall, definitely taller than the average man, but not the imposing size you’d expect from a “dominant” NBA player. He doesn’t even possess “elite” athleticism by NBA standards. His dominance comes from his elite level of skill, a combination of precise long-range shooting and quick and deceptive ball-handling. Curry’s greatness makes me think how much better or worse he would be if he was taller or even more athletic. I didn’t have to think for long before I realized if Curry was taller and more athletic… he’d be Kevin Durant.

You all remember that guy right? The 2014 NBA Most Valuable Player that missed the majority of last season with a foot injury.  During his MVP season Durant’s stat line looked like this: 32 points per game, 5.5 assists, and 7.4 rebounds.  He led his team to 59 wins that season and they finished first in the Western Conference.  They ended up losing to the eventual champion Spurs in the Western Conference Finals in 6 games.  Despite all of those accomplishments, his most memorable moment of that season was probably his MVP speech, often referenced with “You the real MVP”.  This all happened ONE YEAR AGO.  I speak to individuals about basketball pretty often and it’s surprising how little Durant is brought up. It’s insulting.  Over the past 8 seasons, Durant has developed his game tremendously.  He’s not just the scorer that came into the league, he’s improved as a teammate, often facilitating for the offense, and even his defense is deserving of recognition.  He probably could play all 5 designated positions effectively.  This guy is nearly 7 feet with “in-the-gym” range and a killer crossover… yea that guy.

This piece was not meant to take away from the greatness of Stephen Curry, he had a great year.  It was meant to remind everyone that we missed out on a year of Kevin Durant.  The “Durantula” or the “Slim Reaper” has been cleared to play and looks ready for the upcoming season.  I, personally, cannot wait to see Durant back on the floor.  He’s a match-up nightmare for any team and he plays with that “killer” mentality.  I anticipate another MVP level season from Durant, but most importantly, I can guarantee a lasting reminder of Durant’s talent level.  The last reminder we will ever need.  Don’t be so quick to forget.
